Dundas Castle
A glorious 15th century castle in West Lothian.
The owner had always wanted a Minstrel’s Gallery and set about finding the right man for the job, a craftsman who would respect the original features, could repair crumbling stonework and build an exposed timber frame using traditional methods.
The five-year search for the perfect craftsman ended when he met Ken, the perfect choice as his attention to detail and respect for the original design and materials is second to none.
With strict planning and building rules to adhere to, Ken worked off the original corbel stones to create the Minstrels’ Gallery. He created a solid oak timber frame with exposed dovetailed joists.
Ken then renovated and restored original features in two rooms at the back of the gallery which hadn’t been accessed since the 1800’s.
The owner was so pleased with his work that he retained Ken’s services to renovate the old stable courtyard, creating a studio, garage and accommodation with three bedrooms with ensuites, all in keeping with the design of the house.
Throughout, Ken respected the work of the original craftsmen, loving repairing features to bring them back to their former glory.
